Summary: Insightful, experienced advice
My husband and I have been married for three years, with volatile ups and downs the whole time. We never seemed to be able to figure out why we could love each other so much during one season of life, yet practically hate each other the next. We have always had an incredible connection, but the bad times have been very difficult for us, sometimes prompting us to wonder whether we made a mistake by getting married. I understand that not everyone can identify with this, but for those of us who can, this book is lifesaving. Advice on marriage rarely comes from people who have had a hard time of it together, leaving us to rely on advice from those who don't understand the pain we have been through. The advice in this book is insightful and easy to apply in your marriage, straight from those who have been through heartache in marriage personally.

Summary: Great preparation for marriage!
This is an awesome book. It covers all the bases. It suggests a lot of issues to talk over with your spouse-to-be. It really helped my husband and I to not find any surprises when we were married. We felt like we knew what to expect, because of all the discussions we had prior to marriage, especially those that came as a result of this book. I would highly recommend it! It's great!

Summary: Fit to Be Tied: How NOT To Do It
I have to agree with Zossima on this one. My wife and I (now married almost 6 years) were given this book as 'assigned reading' when we were going through our premarital counseling. I have always found myself wondering if the pastor gave it to us because 1) he thought the advice was good, or 2) to show us how NOT to do things.
The points are mostly good but some of the advice I must respectfully disagree with, i.e. making an engagement period a minimum of one year for everyone. They also tell women to look out for men who are lukewarm believers who talk the talk but don't walk the walk. Does the same not apply to rock-solid Christian men looking out for women who are the same way?
While I have tremendous respect for Bill Hybels and the ministry God has accomplished through him, I maintain the same opinion I had when I first finished reading the book almost seven years ago: Based upon their self-admitted immaturity and how they consistently lived on the edge of marital self-destruction, the Hybels really had no business writing a book telling others about how to run a marriage.
It's a good read for couples not yet married. Want a successful marriage? All you have to do is read and look at the way they did things...and then go out and do the exact opposite.
